The 1090 dumbbell is outfitted with a single handle connected to a dial mechanism. As you turn the dial upward, the handle latches on to additional weight plates, with an easy-to-read display telling you how much weight you’ve chosen. Economy of space is important to me and so I decided to bite the bullet and pay for the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells, and I could not be happier or more impressed with the equipment. I purchased the 1090, because I thought I needed the weight of the shoulder shrug, which is true, but if I were to do it again, since I bought a Bowflex Revolution I use for the shoulder shrugs, I buy the 552, because they have less in length and nearly half of the total weight, which makes them much easier to move. But in 1090 the quality is high and great work. It's so easy to change the weights. I also purchased the stand 552/1090 which I recommend because it makes use of dumbbells easier and safer as you do not need to bend down every time you use dumbbells. I found the handles a bit 'uneasy, as I had my gloves so I wrapped up with a tennis racket handle tape and I have a good grip and comfort without gloves.
One of the best purchases I've ever done for my home gym. Bowflex PowerBlock dumbells and and I much prefer these. In honor of my blocks go only to 45 and 90. But I can change wieght fast as the best grip, and don have to worry about any slide pin out (which has happened, not all the way, but enough that I had to stop operating). My only concern is if I ever fell. I'm not sure that it would take a hard fall without damaging the mechanism. I have never or have not been a pitcher of weight, but worry about an accidental tragedy. This would be the area where I would definitely give the edge of powerblocks. The weight is a bit 'less' time to bring the capacity to handle up to 90 pounds. Tweaking your technique ever so little to make this problem does not exist. I've been lifting for 25 years and this is my second favorite piece of my body after Smith Equiptment solid / Freeweight Gym. FYI I bought mine used on Craigslist and saved about half of the $.
